OPENING OF THE PROCEEDINGS

Through a keynote address, brief practical presentations, and discussions with the speakers, the event will examine the key legal and organizational aspects related to data protection and the use of AI in the workplace: employer powers, HR tools, workplace analytics, collaborative systems, digital productivity, remote monitoring, algorithmic transparency, collective bargaining, and the role of union representatives.

The central theme will be the role of the DPO and the Privacy Manager: figures no longer called upon merely to ensure privacy compliance, but also to contribute, alongside other corporate functions, to the prior assessment of AI systems, to coordination between the GDPR, the AI Act, and the Workers’ Statute, and to the definition of governance models capable of reconciling innovation, efficiency, and the protection of individuals.

Keynote Lecture | Privacy, AI and technological surveillance: employers’ powers and limits

The session will address a key issue of today: privacy, artificial intelligence and technological surveillance in the workplace. The evolution of digital tools expands a company’s organisational capabilities, but also increases the risk of covert and corporate-sponsored surveillance. The legal issue, which will be explained to DPOs, is to understand how far employers’ powers can extend and where the limits set by the Workers’ Statute, the GDPR and human dignity begin.
