Gianluigi Riva

Gianluigi M. Riva è postdoctoral research fellow (Ricercatore RTD a) presso l'Università Bocconi, BAFFI Centre on Economics, Finance and Regulation - RULES Unit -, dove è Principal Investigator del progetto PRIME LIBERTIES (PRIvacy of the Mind and Ethical Law for Interactive Brain-Enhancement Regulated Through Interdisciplinary Empirical Solutions) e research fellow dell'Institute for European Policymaking (IEP).

He is a licensed lawyer and holds a Ph.D. (Marie Curie) in Information and Communication Studies (ICS) with a specialization in Privacy, Ethics and New Technologies from University College Dublin, where he is affiliated with research at the Human-Computer Interaction research group of the School of ICS and at the Centre for Human Rights (CHR) and Business Law Regulation Research (BLREG) of the UCD Southern School of Law. He also holds a Ph.D. in Private Law, Roman Law and European Legal Culture from the University of Pavia, where he also earned a Master's Degree in Business Law and Economics.

He has been Fulbright-Shuman visiting scholar at the MIT Media Lab, where he is Connection Science fellow. He is non-residential fellow at the Information Society Law Center at the University of Milan. He is the first and only jurist admitted to the Lindau Nobel Laureate meeting for Physics for his studies on artificial intelligence (AI), quantum mechanics and law. He is a member of the management committee of several European COST Actions and leader of the Working Group on Legal and Ethical aspects of Active Assisted Living (AAL) technologies for the GoodBrother CA 19121 project on "Audio- and video-based privacy for AAL technologies."

He is a member of the scientific committee of AssoDPO on AI and among the members of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) Support Pool of legal experts in information security and new technologies. He is chair of the ethics committee of the BootStrap project at the University of Hertfordshire, UK, and of the ethics committee of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA), an association that awarded him the Best Innovator Award in 2022 for his studies on law and artificial intelligence.

Before entering academia, he was a Carabiniere in classified services, a commercial manager in industry, a business developer, a litigation lawyer, and a data protection consultant.
