Gianluigi Riva

Gianluigi M. Riva is a lawyer specializing in contracts, IT and data protection law and is currently a researcher as Marie Curie Ph.D., fellow in Privacy, Ethics and New Technologies at the University College Dublin, School of Information and Communication Studies of the College of Social Science and Law, with a research project on the manipulation of consent through invasive technologies, focused on Smart Speakers, Internet of Things, Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) and Wearable devices.

He is affiliated with the UCD Insight Center for Data Analytics, where he deals with Artificial Intelligence and Privacy in the European Project H2020 TEAM-ITN (Technology Enabled Mental Health for young people) and as part of his research he has collaborated with Telefonica Innovaciò Alpha (Alpha Health) in Barcelona for the development of integrated governance plans of Ethics and Privacy by Design in the context of the so-called Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).

He is Fulbright-Shuman Visiting Researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Media Lab, in the Human Dynamics group where he participates in the Computational Law project and deals with the comparison of EU-US Privacy legal systems and the study of the regulatory parameters of genetic and biometric profiling .

He represents Ireland as a member of the Steering Committee of the European COST Action n.16207 on “Problematic Usage of the Internet” (PUI), as well as a substitute member in COST Action n.18215 on “China in Europe Research Network” (CHERN).

He is expert at the chair of Informatics and Legal Logic of the University of Pavia and an external consultant for legal strategy and data management of law firms and companies.

He is research assistant at the chair of Information Ethics at UCD, as well as lecturer in the field of privacy and new technologies.

He is a member of the Policy Working Group of the MSCA Action – Mental Health Task Force; member of the Tech and Law Center of Milan; member of the Group of Neuroteoretics and Sciences of the Mind of the I.R.C.C.S. C. Mondino Institute of Neurology Foundation of Pavia; member of the HCI Research group of the UCD and the IEEE.

He is co-founder of ELSA (European Law Student Association) at the University of Pavia.
